SM Krishna Passes Away: Karnataka Declares Mourning and Holiday

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, affectionately known as S.M. Krishna, was a distinguished Indian politician whose career spanned over six decades. Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, Karnataka, he pursued higher education in law, earning degrees from Maharaja’s College, Mysore, and the Government Law College in Bangalore. Furthering his studies in the United States, Krishna graduated with a Master of Laws from Southern Methodist University and TheGeorge Washington University as a Fulbright Scholar.

Krishna’s political journey began with the Indian National Congress, where he held various significant positions, including Member of Parliament and Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. His tenure as the Chief Minister ofKarnataka from 1999 to 2004 was marked by transformative initiatives that propelled Bengaluru into becoming India’s Information Technology hub, earning him the title “Architect of Brand Bengaluru.” He also served as the Minister ofExternal Affairs from 2009 to 2012, contributing to India’s diplomatic engagements on the global stage.

In recognition of his service, Krishna was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2023. His later years saw a shift in political allegiance when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2017.

On December 10, 2024, S.M. Krishna passed away at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness. The Karnataka governmentdeclared a three-day state mourning from December 10 to 12, during which public entertainment events were prohibited, and the national flag was flown at half-mast on all government buildings. Additionally, a government holiday was observed on December 11 to honor his memory.

Krishna’s passing elicited heartfelt tributes from various quarters. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) expressed deep grief, highlighting his simple personality and endearing nature. Sandalwood actress and former Member of Parliament Ramya (Divya Spandana) paid her respects, acknowledging Krishna’s role in her political journey.

S.M. Krishna’s legacy is characterized by his visionary leadership and dedication to public service. His efforts in modernizing Bengaluru and his contributions to India’s foreign policy have left an indelible mark on the nation’s development. As Karnataka and the nation mourn his loss, his life’s work continues to inspire future generations.
